Imperial College London

Imperial College London is one of the premier technical universities in Europe, with a research and teaching budget of approximately € 500 million per year. Within the Faculty of Natural Sciences, two departments (Life Sciences and Environmental Policy), are concerned with issues relevant to the sustainable management of fisheries.

The Centre for Environmental Policy is a postgraduate department with 20 academic staff, 40–50 research staff and 200 MSc and PhD students. It focuses on issues of energy policy, environmental quality, sustainable transitions and Biosecurity (including fisheries, agriculture, food and the natural environment). The Department of Life Sciences contains a fisheries research group which has worked in close collaboration with the Environmental Policy, particularly on economic issues related to population modelling and fisheries management.

Contribution to the project

IC is leading work package 4 and will also be involved in synthesis and dissemination (WP5).

The scientific team

John MumfordProfessor John Mumford is Professor of Natural Resource Management and Head of the Centre for Environmental Policy at Imperial College London. His research includes over 30 years of experience in ecological management and biosecurity risk assessment covering managed environments for agriculture and fisheries, and risk assessment in the natural environment. He has led work packages in the Framework 6 project PRONE on fisheries risk management, in which insurance mechanisms for managing fish stock risks were developed. He is the chair of the Great Britain Non-native Species Risk Analysis Panel advising UK government agencies on methods of risk assessment and management for invasive species. He has conducted horizon scanning projects and risk assessment projects for UK government agencies on present and future environmental risks, involving extensive stakeholder consultation with agricultural industry groups. He is a work package leader on risk assessment methods for agricultural pests in the Framework 7 project PRATIQUE, and he led work packages in the Framework 6 project CLEANFRUIT on design and evaluation of large-scale area-wide insect control programmes. He is also working with WHO on assessment and regulation of risks and opportunities from novel ecological/genetic population control mechanisms for malaria and dengue management, which involves extensive stakeholder consultation with regulators and other stakeholders.  John Mumford brings a range of experience of risk management and large-scale population management from several disciplines.

Polina LevontinPolina Levontin PhD has a doctorate in environmental technology, specializing in fisheries modelling, including hierarchical multi-species modeling and Bayesian approaches.  She has worked in modelling, along with Dr Richard Hillary, for the FP6 PRONE project.

Adrian LeachAdrian Leach PhD has a PhD in environmental technology, specializing in phenological and spatial modelling of populations. He has worked on FP6 PRONE and CLEANFRUIT projects, with FAO on environmental impact assessment, and on a series of applications of insurance quantification and risk assessment in environmental management in commercial and government applications, many involving stakeholder consultation and dissemination packages. Both Drs Levontin and Leach bring extensive experience of modelling a wide range of population management problems from both an ecological and an economic perspective.
